ProfilePicMy name is Dionne Ekendiz, an engineer turned educator. During the transition from gears to teaching, my first daughter was born. I was in the middle of a master’s program in education and doing research in the public school system. Looking into the eyes of my newborn, a little genius who already had so much personality and self determination, made me question everything I was learning. All of those teaching “tricks” that I was willing to use on other people’s children to get them to learn what I wanted was not good enough for my child.

This was a huge wake-up call for me and set me off on a search for alternative education models. When I first read about the Sudbury model, the philosophy immediately resonated with me. I read everything I could find, visited several other Sudbury schools, and began the process of starting one in South Florida. (You can read more about Why I started my own school in my article on redefinED.)

So here I am, in my sixth year as staff member at Sunset Sudbury School in Fort Lauderdale, FL. I have two amazing daughters, ages 9 and 6, who have been attending the school since the beginning. Needless to say, the school and the Sudbury philosophy have become my passion. I’m always sharing stories with friends and family and anyone who will listen! Many have said, “You should start writing all of these down.” I have finally realized that this is code for, “I am sick of listening to your stories.” Hence, the birth of this blog. Although it is mostly for me, I hope you get something out of it too.

I would love to hear from you! I can be reached via email at dionne (at) sunsetsudbury (dot) org.
